Can dogs and cats eat Peanut butter (xylitol-free)?

DogOnly with care
CatOnly with care

Plain peanut butter without xylitol is fine for dogs in small amounts. Some 'sugar-free' or 'light' brands contain xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs.

Why

Possible xylitol in some brands; high fat

Signs to watch for

  • vomiting or diarrhoea (fatty)
  • if xylitol: weakness, collapse, seizures

Good to know

Always check the label for xylitol / birch sugar. Unsalted, no added sweeteners is best. Use small amounts — it is very calorific.
